nâpêhkâsowinowâk - Art Exhibit

This event has already taken place.

Visit Augustana Library from now until September 30th to take in nâpêhkâsowinowâk; a travelling exhibition of 17 artworks and 2 poems from 5 Indigenous artists. nâpêhkâsowinowâk is a Cree word that redefines the traditional concept of the warrior by expanding it to embrace the vital roles of witnessing, recording and bearing testimony to lived experiences. Through a selection of work, the featured artists explore a rich tapestry of themes including identity, pop culture, celebration, emotion, political response and grief. This collective body of work amplifies the voices of a generation of Indigenous men who navigate the complexities of identity, resistance and transformation in a rapidly changing world. By weaving contemporary influences such as fashion and music into their art, these creators highlight how modern culture shapes and informs Indigenous identity today. nâpêhkâsowinowâkinvites visitors to engage deeply with questions of courage, resilience, and warriorhood, challenging us to reflect on what these qualities mean in the context of contemporary life. Thishonors the strength found in bearing witness and speaking truth, expanding the legacy of Indigenous warriors into the present day.
